Make a positive impact

All proceeds from the 2023 Summit Bid Auction will directly support ACC hut projects.

Our huts

the acc’s huts are an investment in providing safe access to the backcountry for our members across Canada

For many of our members, huts are at the heart of their connection to the club. But did you know that they are also the economic engine of the ACC, helping us to fund much of the other work we do, and allowing us to continue to set the bar for safe, affordable, and respectful mountain travel and stewardship?

Your donation to the Summit Bid Auction will help us raise money towards repairs, upgrades, and investments in new huts this year and into the future.

Did you know the ACC is a registered charity?

Your kind donation will have a direct influence on our 116-year legacy of stewardship in Canada’s mountains

THE ALPINE CLUB OF CANADA IS COMMITTED TO:

  • promoting responsible mountain travel and leadership through our courses and programs

  • advocating for the preservation of mountain environments across the country

  • providing low-impact access to Canada’s backcountry through our extensive hut system

The other three pillars of the ACC

In addition to modelling leadership in mountain skills, the ACC was founded on the ideals of providing access, advocating for the mountain environment, and being leaders in shaping mountain culture for the good of all.

Access

We maintain 32 backcountry huts across Canada

The ACC operates the largest network of backcountry huts in North America, giving our users access to a wide range of climbing, hiking and skiing terrain in the alpine and backcountry of many areas of Canada in all seasons. The use of huts is known to centralize, manage, and reduce the environmental impact of backcountry travel and the ACC is an acknowledged leader in environmentally responsible operation of backcountry facilities.

Through our 22 sections located across the country, we work in close collaboration with government, private landowners, and other user groups to develop access management plans and agreements that ensure responsible use of climbing and backcountry areas by our members. We ask all our members to set an example by respecting access agreements and by leaving no trace.

The ACC is proud to provide safety and comfort to mountain travellers. See our huts page to learn more about where we operate facilities.

Environment

We invest over $30,000 annually in grants for alpine expeditions or environmental projects

As Canada’s national mountain organization, the ACC promotes mountaineering while being committed to conservation of mountain environments. Canada’s mountains are an incredible natural and cultural heritage. We believe that having access to the mountains obligates us to understand and protect their unique environments.

PROJECTS WE SUPPORT

  • As of December 2019, we have granted over $50,000 through the Environment Fund.

  • The State of the Mountains Report is an annual ACC publication that highlights the startling impacts of climate change on the alpine environment of Alberta and British Columbia.

  • The ACC also acts as an influential advocate for projects and organizations that align with our mountain values, including the Jumbo Wild campaign, working with the Alberta government in support of the protection (through parks creation) of the Alberta Rockies' eastern slopes, and partnering on a projects with Canadian Geographic.

Mountain culture

The ACC creates a number of mountain publications each year on topics affecting the health of the mountain environment, mountain education and shared alpine stories.

These include the annual Canadian Alpine Journal (CAJ), the ACC Gazette which comes out three times per year, the ACC Aspects Blog which publishes continuously throughout the year, and the annual State of the Mountains Report.
